1980 Fall tour: repertoire

1980 Fall tour: main page and map - itinerary and recordings - trivia & statistics - official releases

Songs frequencies and release status

In this tour the band played 56 different "regular" songs, 27 previously released and 29 previously unreleased, to the unreleased batch should be added three songs (Drowning Witch, Truck Driver Divorce and Luigi & The Wise Guys) that only had some lyrics preview over some improvised musical texture or during the performance of other songs.

The following table shows the frequency that every song in the tour was performed, and if they were, at the time, already released on official Zappa records. Only "regular" songs are listed. In every single square songs are ordered from the more played to the less played.

One song still remains officially unreleased (Nite Owl, the only cover fully played during this tour).

Song sequencing

The following table shows the main sequence structures for the more frequently performed songs in this tour.
Of course it is just indicative, because in this tour Zappa was varying each set list. Nevertheless many songs have often the same sequence order even if sometimes some song can be omitted. It is just a coincidence that (one of) the main body sequence of this table is identical to the one available in Buffalo: the table was built way before the release of that album.
Songs in (round brackets) appear only in few tapes. The "other blocks" show a couple of song sequences that appear rarely in the tapes available from this tour, in different set list positions and often not including all the songs listed (here is given the complete sequence as it appears in few tapes from this tour - these sequences has been used more often in other Zappa's tour).

Heavy Duty Judy was mostly, but not always, played in medley with The Torture Never Stops. Note that it has some lyrics only in the Pittsburgh 11/13 late performance.
In this tour the Society Pages medley was played without the usually opening title song used in You Are What You Is album and in the other tours where this medley was played (see the following tables).

Only 1975 - 1984 bands/tours are considered and only regular songs are listed. No song was played only in this tour/by this band.

Disclaimer
Near everything here is based on Jon Naurin set lists.
Even if it is my aim for the future, I have not verified all of Naurin's set lists by comparing them with the tapes in my personal vault, but I know from experience that at least 90% of Naurin set lists are correct.
Tables, statistics and all information will be updated when new recordings surface or if I discover incorrect data in the Naurin set lists.
Warning: for some reason I've removed all punctuation (,?!) from song titles.
