"Hello, welcome to mosquito heaven!"

One of the amazing shows from the iconic and infamous Italian run from the 1982 tour which is well known among Zappa fans for being musically excellent shows preserved on great sounding tapes and... with major scuffles. The Palermo one that concluded the tour is the most well known example but there were problems on the other shows as well. The Milano show is the one that got depicted in the front cover of "The Man From Utopia" album. FZ and the band played in an outdoor venue that was infested by mosquitos and, if that wasn't enough, people from the front seats started to stand up and the ones behind, visibly annoyed, threw things at them who, inevitably, ended up onstage: this included bottles and syringes. For this reason, the show gets stopped three times. The music itself reflects that: it's loud, aggressive and very very good. When the shows are of this quality it's difficult to pick up highlights but, as far as this band goes, FZ's guitar playing is amazing and the show is a great experience. Seeing it live was probably great but you can now enjoy it without being tormented by mosquitos!

Sound quality of this tape is amazing, especially from this recently unearthed master tape transfer, kindly provided by metro_cubo (one of my personal favorite tapers, although it looks like he didn't tape this one) on The Traders Den. I am actually quite puzzled that this show was rated so low on FZShows as this was always an excellent tape. This seems to be a common thing among the Italian leg, which is mostly rated as B+ tapes: most of them are in the A range to me, but I digress. Anyway, this version, being from the master is the best shared so far and it sounds amazing. Thanks to Flambay (who provided speed correction values) and PittyLabelle (who provided other adjustment suggestions) it now sounds even better. There are some balance channel problems that I tried to correct but I came to the conclusion that my corrections were just making them more distracting so I left them where they are. This is a wide stereo recording and it sounds like the microphone was moving. Nonetheless, this is one of the best audience tapes that can be found. This is the only known tape source available so far, so there are no patches available for the cuts: luckily it sounds like the taper was quite fast at switching tape sides!

As requested by the original seeder, I am also including the original info file which I'll quote now in full:

LDB Special Series #354 (RLR collection)

Out of my 7,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the
musicians, the venue or unexpected events. These are the ones I'd like to propose you. Most of these come from my
cassettes collection, so they will be released at a slower pace than my Master Series! But you won't be disappointed!
I will try to gather the most unusual things I have in my collection and, as always, your feedback and comments will be my
reward for all the work involved in this project.

DO NOT share this music on mp3, just convert it for your own use. Sharing mp3's is the right way to make me stop sharing
music here.

I think I have something really special to share with all Dimers, but first a bit of background. RLR has been a very active
trader back in the early 80´s with very wide musical tastes: he could go from Kiss to Joni Mitchell; from Genesis to Deep
Purple, Queen, Simple Minds, The Who, Springsteen and many more. In the past I could access his enormous collection to get
many U2 tapes some of which I have been sharing with you folks.

RLR had all sorts of tapes in his collection, traded not long after the show happened so most of them are low generation, in
particular tons of shows recorded in Italy which to me are some of the most interesting. Some of them, I had never seen
circulating in the trading circuit. Unfortunately he did not care about generation so this info, except for the shows he
has as masters, is not available.

RLR has kindly given me access once again to his collection. It was like a "kid in a toy shop" situation: it was hard to
select tapes and at the end I came home with some 250 tapes to listen and eventually to transfer in the digital domain. Some
of them will be shared here, possibly the most interesting ones.

I am ok with blogs and sites to re-post my seeds - provided they are in lossless form - however I ask you to keep intact the
infos of the concert including that this is part of LDB series.

And I am referring to (and not only):

Last but not the least, a very important message: I will not be uploading anymore @ Dimeadozen. TTD will be my new home
from now. If you want to download my shows please subscribe here and not re-upload @ Dime. Stay tuned because I have more and
more shows coming up!

Excellent sounding recording of the infamous Milano show from 1982. That was captured in the cover of the Man From Utopia cover
where Zappa & band had to fight with mosquitos for all the duration of the show (and for those who have been to shows at Parco
Redecesio, they know what I am talking about...). Also, Zappa had to deal with the usual phenomenon (I don´t know if it was
common in other countries but in Italy was more frequent) of people on the front standing up, not allowing people at the back
to see. Then those from the back would start throwing objects to those at the front and some of them would arrive to the stage.
Zappa would then stop the music and ask to people to be seated in order to allow everybody to see. But I remember back then that
the most stupid ones would stand up again and throwing objects would start again...

A friend who attended the show told me that Zappa was quite pissed off and did not play the whole set which was supposed to be
longer. Anyway this is what was played that night, in pristine quality.

Thanks for preparing this for Zappateers.

As I mentioned in the external sources subforum, the seed at Trader's Den also includes shows played that month at the same venue by The Police, Talking Heads and Siouxsie and the Banshees, that I've been tempted to download to find if their shows went off with less incident than Zappa's.

Wow. Thanks to all for bringing this master out to the Zappa community. I agree with Galeans that this is an excellent show and was always an enjoyable listen. So, I am looking forward to hearing this upgrade for sure.

Kind regards,

wow! just wow. Am I wrong or is it the first time that a show from the 1982 tour with a A rate surface here (I'm still waiting for a special Vault release (besides the YCDTOSA volume). This tour is a bit l'Arlésienne...

is it me hmm during this audience recording (fantastic sound quality and amazing solos) : during Sharleena, Zappa complains about throwing bottles on stage and other stuff and that he is here to play music; gently...
did he had to repeat this during several Italian gigs ? because from what I remember on YCDTOSA after the "throwing" on stage complains, Zappa says otherwise the show is over. Then there's more and Zappa : "the show is over". dot.

could the "Milano" show have been edited on YCDTOSA to include portion of this show and the "show is over" comes from another Italian show ?

check the Geneve show. It is genuine, just edited down on YCDTOSA 5.
